How did my Jazz ensemble assessment go?
This week is the last week for music class and the last assessment that we must do is the Jazz ensemble. I really worked hard in this Jazz ensemble because I want to give my best for the last music class. I think I did a very good job in playing the violin and I think I didn't really make mistakes. However, the sound of the piano is very loud so the guitar sound can't really be hears. But overall, all the teachers said that our performance is good and we also get a good score. There's no instrument call on Wednesday as it is used for the assessment. On Monday, we did have the last practice before the assessment. We have some problem cause we haven't made the intro and the improvisation. However, we managed to work together to do that and we finally got it. I am really thankful to Mr.Sadrakh as he helped us a lot.

Practice 13

This is my practice with my team members. One of my team members couldn't join the practice with us. I can see that I play kind of late in the beginning and I made some mistakes too. But, overall, I think it's okay. The piano sound is kind of loud, so, in the second practice of this week, the sound of the piano will be lower.














Practice 14

This is my second practice with my team members. I think, I improve in this second practice and I play it beautifully. I also memorize all the notes. I just did one mistakes in playing the f# notes. I'm going to practice more at home so that I can play it beautifully and correctly in the assessment.

What do I think about my jingle?
We were given the jingle music assessment. In this assessment, we were supposed to create a video and jingle composition with the theme "beautiful Indonesia" in 2 weeks. My partner is Yoshiko and we split up the work as I will do most of the music composition and she will make the video and we finalized the work together. I think my composition is good and nice to hear. The video is also good. The song and the video match to each other. I am really happy and satisfied. Our assessment for the Jazz ensemble is next week, so, Mr.Herry gave us time to rehearse in class this week. I was absent on Monday, and finally, I meet my groups at Wednesday. I am really happy as I can directly play a good performance together with my team members. Our supervisor is Mr.Sadrakh and he gave us a lot of useful advice. I think my group did a good job in this rehearsal.

Practice 9

I did the other parts of the autumn leaves song in this practice. At first, I made some mistakes in playing the notes. But, as it is going, it’s getting better. I think, it’s okay for me to practice the whole song in the next video practice.

I think I did some improvements on playing the whole song. But, I made some mistakes at the last part. I think, I just need more practice so that I can play it correctly and beautifully.

Week 6

Practice 11

I was told by one of my friends that I am her team members in the Jazz ensemble and we are going to play a song titled “smile”. I was not able to come on week 6 as I have some problems. However, I manage to practice this song. I think I made a good start as I can already remember the song and I think I play it beautifully even though I still made some mistakes. I’m going to practice more in playing this song.

Practice 12

In this practice, I play my part only, not the whole song. In my group Jazz ensemble, we divide our own part and make some improvisation in playing the song. In this video, I just play the first part of the song.  I think I did well in this practice. I’m going to practice the second part in the next video.

How did my singing assessment go?

On Monday, my class had the group singing assessment on a jazz song titles "Close to You". This song was originally sung by carpenters. Mr.Herry gave us one week to prepare with our group to practice. My teammates are Yoshiko and Derrick. After we were divided into groups, we started to practice and we had so much help from our instrument teacher, Mr.Sadrakh. He helped us to divide our voices and make some harmonization to the song. He also accompanied us by playing the organ. I think my group did a really good job in the assessment. We were all able to sing it well, remember our parts and memorize the song. I think, we could have done it better if we have more practice. This week, we only had one music instrument class because  the class on Monday was used for our group singing assessment. On Wednesday, we start to practice playing the autumn leaves again. I think we did some improvements as we have been practicing this song for quite a long time. We decided to practice together as we wanted to prepare for our Jazz ensemble assessment that is going to come in this near time.

How is my progress in the Jazz ensemble?

I was absent this week, so, I haven't practice the Jazz ensemble with my friends. However, one of my friend told me the song that we are going to play which is "smile". If I have time, I am going to record the video practice of this song.

Week 1

Practice 1

This is my first practice in playing "autumn leaves" song. I just practice the first part first. I think I made a good start in playing it. I made so many mistakes. I need to do more practice so that I can lessen my mistake and play the song beautifully

Practice 2

In this second practice, I tried to play the whole song. I think it is okay, but, I still make a lot of mistakes. I will try to consult my problem with my instrument teacher so that he can help me to overcome my problem. I will try to practice more so that I can play it nicely.




Week 2

Practice 3

This is my third practice in practicing the song. I think I've made some improvements, but still, I've made some mistakes. I need to practice more so that I can fix the mistakes that I've made.

Practice 4

This is my fourth practice and I can see that I can play the song better. I'm quite happy with the progress that I've made. As usual, I'm going to practice more at home so that I can play it beautifully without making any mistakes.

Week 3


Practice 5

In this practice, I try to change my rythm in playing the song. Mr. Sadrakh said that it will not be too plain if we change the rythm into a "jazzy" thing. I think I made some mistakes due to the change of the rythm. I need to practice more so that I can be used to it and lessen the mistakes that I've made.




Practice 6


I think I've made some good improvements in this practice. I think I am able to control the rythm, even though still not really fluent, and I made some improvements in playing the notes. I am so happy as I can made such as good progression. I'm going to consult about my problems to my instrument teacher so that I can fixed my mistakes and make a good improvements on it. 




Week 4


Practice 7

In this practice, I tried to play the first part only because I think I didn’t do really well in playing the song. I’ve made some mistakes and forgot some notes. But, as it goes, it’s getting better. I need to practice more on this part so that I can play it correctly.

Practice 8

I think I did some improvements in this practice. I can remember all the notes clearly and I can play it without stopping. However, I still did some mistakes. I think it’s okay for me to move to the next part as I think I don’t really have time left until the assessment.

What is the role of music in your life?

Music is something that is very important in my life. Music is like my best friend that will always be there for me whenever I need it. When I am happy, excited, sad, worry, etc, I can express those feelings through music and it can makes me relax somehow. Also when I'm bored, or doing see works, I can entertain myself by listening to the music. My life is more enjoyable with the presence of music. In the instrument class, me and my friends started to choose one of the Jazz song given to practice. We decided to choose "autumn leaves" because we had practice "fly me to the moon" last term. I still have some problem in playing it because this is the first time I practice. However, I already familiar with the song. I'll practice more at home.

What are the functions of music in society?
There are so many functions that music has in the society. First, it can be used for advertisement. Through putting the music in the advertisement, it will become more attractive and can get more attention from the viewers. Second, it helps us to express our feelings freely. Third, it can also manipulate moods. For example: If we can listen to sad songs, we can also feel sad. There are still a lot of functions other than the ones that have been mentioned above. In the instrument class, me and my friends continue to practice playing the "Autumn Leaves" song. Mr. Sadrakh help to accompany us using the piano/keyboard. I think I've made some improvements, but still, I've made some mistakes. I need to practice more at home so that I can fix it. ^o^

How have developments in technology changed the ways in which we engage with music?
Long ago, before technology have been made, people needs to go to a concert/opera, etc to listen to the music. They can't directly listen to music at their home/school, etc. Now, with the developments of technology such as radio, TV, ipod, mp3 player, etc, people can engage with music everywhere they like easily. They can even download the songs that they like and put it on their ipod. So, anytime if they want to hear it, they can just play the ipod. Thus, technology has and will continue to influence growth and development in the music industry. I only have 1 instrument class this week as on Wednesday, the whole session is used for the group slides presentation. On Monday, Mr.Sadrakh told us to change our rythm so that it will not be so plain. It's not really that hard, but sometimes, I kinda misplayed some notes due to the change of the rythm, I'll practice more at home so that I can be used to it.

How does business and industry affect music-makers and users?
Business and industry affect music-makers economically. Through the business, the music-makers can earn much money as they are needed to compose songs for the singers to sing so that the business can sell their album and can entertain the society. Business and industry helps the music users as they can be able to listen to various of songs and they can buy their favorite songs/artists music in an album form. It gives a good impact to the users and the music makers. On Monday, in the instrument class, me and my friends starts to practice in our singin "Close to You" as we have assessments next week. Mr. Sadrakh helped us to divide our voices and make some harmonization in some parts. I was absent on Wednesday. I am going to practice my violin at home and upload it in the blog.

How was my Jazz class delivered?
Today, my Jazz class is delivered nicely. I am able to know more about Jazz and its history. We have a group work and discuss things together. I think, the Jazz lesson this week is quite interesting and I like to know more about it. We don't have instrument class today as the instrument teacher show us some performance of playing Jazz music. It was awesome. I really like the way they play Jazz music. I was inspired by Mr.Sadrakh and I am interested to learn more about playing Jazz music using the violin.

How is my progress in learning Jazz?
On Monday,we start our class by getting the task booklet from the teacher and discuss about the task booklet. Then, we give our opinion about "is music a language" and for the end, we review about the glossary, essay and history of Jazz. On Wednesday, we started this class by doing the rehearsal in singing the Jazz song "What a Wonderful World." Through those things that I've learnt this week, I think I've made a good progress in learning Jazz. I know more about Jazz clearly and I'm able to sing a Jazz song. By doing the essay about Jazz, I can know my ability in understanding about Jazz. In the instrument class, me and my friends asked Mr.Sadrakh to show example in playing "fly me to the moon" using violin. We record it so that we can exercise it at home. I think I already know and heard of this song, so, it's easier for me to memorize and play the melody.

How does my understanding of Jazz develop after the previous assessments?
I think I learn much more about Jazz music. From the essay assessments, I'm able to know more about Jazz history and improvisation in Jazz and daily life. I've also heard about Jazz music examples which makes me to know about Jazz melody. I've also learnt how to sing Jazz music from the singing assessment. I like to learn Jazz and I'm really interested to know more about the types of Jazz music. In the instrument class, my friends and I practice the song "fly me to the moon". I still need a lot of practice as there are some notes that I mistaken and I also need to practice my hearing so that I'll play the right pitch.

How is my understanding learning blues and applying it?

So far, I get to learn the basic in making 12 bars blues composition. I think it's quiet easy as we just making the melody based on the notes that suit in each chord. I apply all my understanding about Jazz and blues in making this 12 bars blues composition. I'll try my best in making a good melody on my composition. On Monday, I played and practice the song "fly me to the moon". I think I've improved in playing it. I just need to practice on placing my finger on the right place to hit the right notes. I'm going to practice my blues composition now at home so that I can play it nicely and made less mistake on the assessment.

Challenges in working on my 12 bars blues finale task.

The challenges that I faced during the making of my won 12 bar blues composition is that I need to make a melody which fit the chords yet good to hear. Sometimes, the melody that only fit with the chords are not always really good to hear. Other than that, I don't think I faced anymore problem. I will study more about blues so that I can easily compose a good melody. about up until now, I think my composition is good. Today, in instrument class, I ask my violin teacher, Mr.Sadrakh to help me to demonstrate my music composition. I record a video of him so that I can practice it at home. I think my melody is good but I think there are some parts that is hard to be played. I will try to continue it at home so that I can make a good process in playing it.

How is my progress playing my own 12 bars blues?
I think I made a good progress in playing my own 12 bars blues. Even though I can't play it 100% yet, but, I already memorize the song and can play some of the bars quite well. I still made some mistakes in placing my 4th finger and I still made some mistakes in playing the notes. I need to practice harder at my house so that at least I can improve in playing the song and work on my mistakes. In the instrument class, I practice my own 12 bars blues composition with the piano accompaniment played by Mr.Sadrakh. I need to practice more on the 4th fingers because I always misplace that finger which causes an error in the notes and it sounds wrong. will practice it more at my house so that I can have an improvement next meeting.

How does the blues influence Jazz in its early development?
Based on my research, the 12 bars-blues chorus, with its familiar harmonic structure and narrative form, was the single most popular template for early Jazz improvisation. Early Jazz player and singer used blues songs as the foundation for many of their most important creations. Jazz also uses some of the blue notes. Blues is an attitude of facing the uncertainties of existence with a clear vision and Jazz is a process for ensuring meaningful and spontaneous collective creation. It becomes even clearer that the blues and Jazz compliment each other. In the instrument class, I asked some questions to my teacher about the notes and the finger placing that I still don't understand. I always play the Eb notes incorrectly. I think I need to practice more so that I can be familiar with the sound and I can know directly in which exact place that I should put my 4th finger in playing the Eb notes.

I think I'm able to know and understand more about improvisation through the researched information that I found and through applying it in playing my 12 bars blues composition. I've learnt that after playing the fixed notes/song composition, the player.the musician can improvise it by playing any notes which are suitable with the chords and with the same rythm. Each musician will have different improvisation as each people has different style. In instrument class, as usual, I practice my own 12 bars blues composition. The assessment is on next week Wednesday, so, I really need to practice my song several times so that I can play it beautifully and won't make any mistakes on the assessment. I will also do my practice at home.

Through all the things that I've learnt about Jazz and blues in this term 3, I'm now able to understand mostly about it. Before, I don't know much about Jazz and blues. The group work and the essay assessment about Jazz helped me to understand the concept, definition and features of Jazz. Singing a Jazz song helped me to experience the feeling of singing this type of song. Making the 12 bar-blues composition helped me to understand more about blues without learning so much things about it's theories. And lastly, through the performance that I did in the assessment on playing my own 12 bar blues composition, I've learnt that I need to enjoy the song so that I can play it beautifully and without any pressure. In the instrument class on Monday, I do the final rehearsal before the assessment. That is the last day that I can practice my composition with my instrument teacher. I think I've made some good improvements in playing it. I just need to do a little bit more practice at home so that I will be ready on the assessment day.

This is my first practice of playing the "fly me to the moon song". It is a sample of jazz song. I only practice some bars as I'm still new with it. I think I need some improvements in playing it.

This is my second practice. I try to play the whole part 1. I think i made a little improvement but I need to practice more so that I will not make many mistakes.

This is the video when I practice to play the whole part 2 of the song. The only difference is the ending part. I need to practice more because there are notes that are played incorrectly especially the G# and G. I need to know the right place to hit the right notes.

This is the second practice of playing the second bars of my blues composition. I think, I've made a good improvements in playing it. I'm going to continue playing the last bar of my composition so that I will be able to play and practice the whole song by the next 2 video practice.

This is the practice of me playing the last bar of my blues composition. I think, the same as the second bar practice, I've made a good start in playing the last bar. I played some of the notes correctly and the tempo is also constant. I will practice this last bar again on the next video practice so that I will be able to play the whole song of my 12 bars blues composition.

This is the the practice in playing the last bar, which is the third bar of my blues composition. I think it is okay and the notes are played correctly. I will be showing the progress to my instrument teacher so that I can know my mistakes. I'm going to play the whole bars starting from the next practice video.

This is the second practice in playing my own 12 bars blues composition. I think I just make some improvements in playing it but I think it's a good process. I'm going to show this result to my instrument teacher so that he can know the progress of my performance in playing the song.

In the instrument class, I've practice plating my composition using the piano accompaniment played by my instrument teacher. I think, with the help of the piano accompaniment, I'm able to play it more beautifully and I can know the right pitch of the notes that I should be playing. In this video, I think, I've made a good improvements on playing the 3 bars and I will practice it again and again so that I won't make any mistakes.

In this video, it can be seen that I've made a good improvements in playing the 12 bars blues composition. I think I need to listen more on the right pitch in the piano so that I can know whether the notes that I'm playing in the violin is right or wrong. I need to do more practice from now on because the assessment is coming near.

I think I already play the song nicely than before. I also do some of my practice in the instrument class. So, for the next 2 practice videos, I'm going to keep up the good work and do some more improvements so that I won't make many mistakes on the assessment day.

In this video, I was playing my 12 bars blues composition. The assessment is coming near, so, I really need to prepare well. Fortunately, I've memorized the song, so, it's easier for me to play the composition as I can practice anywhere without worrying about the music scores.

This is the last video practice before I will do the assessment. I think I still made some mistakes but the mistakes is not really that big,,, the problem is always the same: misplaced the fingers in playing the Eb notes. I will practice more and more, even on weekend, so that I can overcome the problem in playing the Eb notes. But overall, I think, I played the 12 bars blues composition quite nice.
